Art Unveiling

A few months ago, St. Thomas Public Library applied for the McGregor Morris Fund through Elgin-St. Thomas Community Foundation. It’s a grant that works hard to put pieces of art in public places by allowing a charitable or non-profit organization to purchase art that will be permanently displayed within a public space within Elgin County. And good news – we received the grant!
The piece St. Thomas Public Library selected is an original by Laura Woermke, entitled “Lake Margaret #7.” I don’t want to spoil the surprise by going into too much detail, but I will say that it suits the library’s new space perfectly. It will be predominately displayed on the main level – directly across from the front doors.
We hope you can join us when we officially unveil this beautiful piece of art. The Art Unveiling Ceremony is on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 (the day after Family Day) at 3:00 p.m. Refreshments will be provided.
A bit about the artist:
By day, Laura Woermke is the Executive Director and Curator at St. Thomas-Elgin Public Art Centre. By night, she’s a dynamo of creative brilliance. Laura has been a featured artist at the library before, participating in both Art in the Library (a monthly display of local art) and the featured artist for the library’s annual Trivia Night. Laura is part of many guilds and groups, including the Port Stanley Artist Guild and St. Thomas-Elgin Artist Guild.
What Laura says about herself: “As an artist, I aim to keep the mystery alive in my work as much as possible. This reflected not only in the questions I ask, but also by keeping an open mind about how art can engage the world.”
We’re very excited about having this piece as part of the permanent library collection, and very grateful to Elgin-St. Thomas Community Foundation and the McGregor Morris Fund.
